The Greatest Grand Final Ever

September 24th, 1989

Many argue this is the greatest grand final played of all time!

The Tigers were chasing their first premiership since 1969, The Raiders their first ever. The Tigers were leading 12-2 at half time, but that didn’t stop the ‘Green Machine’ from fighting back. After Benny Elias missed what would have been match-winning field goal, Raiders, John “Chicka” Ferguson managed to weave his way over the line to level the scores, leading into extra time. With this momentum, the Raider’s kicked a field goal, to win Canberra their maiden premiership.

The Tackle

Bledisloe Cup, 1994

“That Tackle” as they call it, a match-winning tackle that saved the day at the Sydney Football Stadium. The All Blacks were trailing 20-16, with only seconds in the game. Jeff Wilson, All Blacks wingers, charged towards the try line, stepping Australia’s players one after the other. What looked like a heartbreaking try to come, Wallabies halfback, George Gregan, came flying across the field and made “that tackle” that secured a 20-16 triumph for Australia.
